It's time for a new Nebraska Flag

The Nebraska flag flew upside down at Capitol for 10 days and 'nobody noticed,' according to State Sen. Burke Harr, sponsor of  LR3 that seeks to redesign the flag. Nebraska's flag is currently ranked among the 5 worst according to the North American Vexillological Association.

Here are some of my ideas:

Sunset Flag

I'm still figuring out the best colors for this design, inspired by the Midwestern sunset and also the Arizona state flag. The rays of light double to represent plowed fields.

Equality Before The Law
Inspired by both the above sunset motif as well as the state's motto, “Equality before the law.” The arch and band design evokes the astrological sign Libra (♎), the scales. Balanced scales are often used to represent justice.

Stylized Borders
The outline of the state is instantly recognizable to every Nebraska schoolchild. This stylized depiction evokes the equal sign (=), a reminder of the state motto. The break in the middle represents the Platte river, which passes through approximately the middle of the state.

Blue & Gold (and sometimes Silver)
These are rendered in the current state colors and display various imagery routinely connected with Nebraska. Clockwise from top-left: scales of justice, Chimney Rock, wagon wheel, setting sun with 6 rays representing the 6 bordering states, anvil, corn.

Two Rivers
The Missouri and Platte Rivers are central to the history of Nebraska.
